In September 2004, Chicha Shack opened the first hookah operation of its kind in Iowa. Our hookah lounges are unique and they are considered one of the most popular gathering places for groups of people ready to socialize in a relaxed and ultra-comfortable setting.

We manage 3 locations in Iowa (Ames - Des Moines - Coralville), and we continue to lead the way in developing the pleasurable experience of hookah smoking.

For those unfamiliar with hookah lounges, the practice of smoking hookahs involves three parts: the hookah, shisha and coals.

The hookah is a water pipe that has water and sometimes juices mixed into the base. Shisha, which is a combination of fruit molasses (70-90%) and tobacco (10-30%), is placed in a clay bowl at the top of the hookah. The tobacco is slightly different from the tobacco found in cigarettes as much of the added chemicals are not included, which means no tar. The coal heats the tobacco which produces smoke that passes through the chamber and the base. The water in the base serves two purposes, filtering out the trace amounts of nicotine (.05%) as well as cooling the smoke.
